Thanksgiving

I haven't cooked Thanksgiving dinner in a couple of years and I forgot how much work it is.  We decided to deep fry the turkey this year and that is an experience... we had mixed reviews.  The first problem was that we did not have enough peanut oil... so Steve had to run around to several stores to find it.  When we finally got the oil heating and put the turkey in... the thermometer was not working.   There is a reason the Allstate commercials show a turkey deep fryer in their ads around Thanksgiving... the fire hazard is huge.  There is oil everywhere and an open flame of course... it is nerve wracking trying to keep from setting the house and the turkey tenders on fire (turkey tenders in this case were husband Steve and son Ryan).  The results were a little disappointing compared to the work involved in the frying process.  The skin was a little gummy and not the crispy skin we were expecting.  The meat was very moist and tasted delicious.  It is a lot of work and a huge mess.  Not sure is we will do this again.  It only took 50 minutes to cook which was great, but we missed the smell of roasting turkey in the house.  Another issue was that we had no turkey drippings to make gravy.   All things considered though, it was kind of fun to do something different... and I have always been curious about the deep-fried turkey.  Happy Thanksgiving!
